Story from a real-life linguist!

This weekend we got a chance to hear from a CanIL alumnus who has been working with Wycliffe/SIL in Tanzania! It was so encouraging to hear that she was able to do all of what she does with a degree from Trinity. Since Tanzania is right next to Mozambique, a lot of the pictures she showed were so similar to the things that I had seen - I miss it! This woman is doing elicitation, so she holds workshops, not for dictionaries, but for preliminary word lists that end up being raw data for linguists to study before translation can begin in that language. She talked about periods of extreme stress (mostly the 3-week-long workshops), followed by times of quiet analysis by herself in her office. It was pretty funny when she made the comment: "If you like work to be the same everyday, don't do this kind of work. In fact, don't do missions!" Thankfully, God has been teaching me how to adapt to change through these various trips and life-changes. This woman also suggested some courses that would be helpful to have taken, so I will definitly try to select those when making up my schedule for the next 3 semesters.

One month down, just 2 and a half until semester break!!!!

Don't wish your life away too fast...slow down and enjoy where you are right now.... :) The learning is part of the process and a valuable part of your life!!

Thanks for the reminder! I was thinking about that this morning. So often I get stuck in the past or look ahead to the future, but I don't generally focus on the present.
